With an interest in sailing and the outdoors dating back to her teenage years in the Scout Movement and a short but successful career in the financial services industry in Edinburgh, Deborah left the city life with her husband to raise a family in the Lanarkshire town of Biggar.  Following a number of years on the "Mothers & Toddlers" and coffee morning circuit, once her youngest of two daughters started primary school, Deborah found herself the owner of the town's delicatessen.  While running the delicatessen was fun, a chance visit to the Firth of Forth to take photographs of the Forth Bridge one crisp February Sunday morning set an unstoppable turn of events... the purchase of a sailing dinghy, the passing of RYA Dinghy Level 2, gaining the RYA Competent Crew certificate, four months in North Wales to gain the RYA Yachtmaster Off-Shore Certificate of Competence, a two handed yacht delivery from Fort William to Gran Canaria, becoming a RYA Cruising Instructor, a couple of short-handed crossings of the Atlantic, gaining the RYA Yachtmaster Ocean endorsement, becoming a shore-based RYA Instructor, instructing for a number of RYA Sailing Schools around the UK, competing in a number of RORC races (including the Fastnet), becoming a RYA Yachtmaster Instructor and the registration of BRITSAIL as a landlocked Lanarkshire based RYA Sailing School in 2009.
In late 2011 Deborah first started talking to Duncan Chalmers, Kip Marina’s General Manager, about the relocation of BRITSAIL to Kip Marina. At the same time Deborah found the perfect sail training yacht, albeit not in the perfect location, resulting in a "challenging" non-stop sail from Plymouth to Kip Marina in mid-January with a crew made up of past students and a friend from a previous transatlantic crossing.

The BRITSAIL's classroom is currently being fitted and the new yacht is undergoing coding with a schedule to have BRITSAIL fully operational and ready for the 2012 sailing season before the end of March.
